TRAD CLIMBING

HISTORY: Trad Climbing is a form of rock climbing that requires climbers to place protective gear (wire stoppers and spring-loaded camming devices) into cracks of various sizes in the event of a fall.  Traditional climbing dates back to the late 1880s in Wales of Great Britain and the Dolomites.  By 1958, Warren Harding, Wayne Merry, and George Whitmore scaled the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley in 47 days using "siege" tactics with fixed ropes.  On June 6, 2018, Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell climbed the Nose in under 2 hours (1:58:07).

"Probably the most nasty kind of crack is Offwidth.

It's a size which is too big for a fist, but too narrow for the whole body to go deep inside the crack." Adam Ondra

Watch  Adam Ondra send Belly Full of Bad Berries (8a/5.13b) an off-width crack in Indian Creek, Utah.  For those into off-width climbing, this tutorial may provide you insight for your next onsight.  For more Adam Ondra videos please visit his profile page.
