After surviving a horrific surfing accident in Morocco, Billy is finally cleared to get back on a board, Billy Kemper sets his sights on the ultimate goal: surfing the famed big wave break Jaws. Soon after returning home to Hawaii, a mammoth swell presents Billy with the opportunity to test his body and make a triumphant return to the spot that defined his career.
After hip and knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus, It took Billy everything he had mentally and physically to push through the pain of his injury. Though ecstatic to be home with his family, Billy also realizes the burden he puts on them and how much care he needs himself and opts to head back to California to finish the rest of his rehabilitation. At the same time, Billy's mother is battling cancer, and as she went through treatment, she insisted Billy continue pursuing his dreams and competing. Finding inspiration in his mother's enduring spirit, Billy went on to take fourth at the Puerto Escondido Challenge and second at the Pe'ahi Challenge. At the Nazaré Challenge, he clinched the 2017 Big Wave World Title and brought his World Title home to celebrate with his mom shortly before her passing.
After a harrowing 6,000-mile emergency flight from Morocco to California, Billy Kemper touches down in Los Angeles and is finally reunited with his family and loved ones marks the end of one, life-threatening journey and the start of the long road to recovery.
After suffering a life-threatening fall on a strike mission in Morocco, Billy Kemper found himself living out every surfer’s nightmare. Stuck in a faraway hospital with a severely injured knee, hip, and pelvis, Billy’s only goal was to get back to his wife and four kids.
2019 was a career-defining year for Billy Kemper. From coveted magazine covers to Big Wave contest wins to a memorable run in the Pipe Masters, Billy was riding an incredible wave of momentum into 2020. That all changed in an instant with a life-threatening fall in big, barreling surf at Morocco’s Safi Point.
