MTB XCO RACING

HISTORY: In 1983, USA held its first national mountain bike championship.  In 1990, the first World Cup Mountain Bike Championships was held in Durango, Colorado.  Ned Overlend (USA) captured Gold in cross country for the men.  Julia Furtado (USA) captured Gold in cross country for the women.  Six years later (1996), Mountain Biking made its debut at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, with a cross-country event for men and women. The program has remained unchanged.

KATE COURTNEY, 23, is the first American in 20 years to win a Gold Medal in a UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, making her the favorite in the 2021 Olympic Games at Tokyo, Japan.  Nipping at her heels is Jolanda Neff, 27, the Swiss rider that finished the year just 30 points behind Courtney in the World Cup standings. Note: The 2020 Summer Olympics was postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
