SUPERCROSS
HISTORY: Motocross evolved in the U.K. from motorcycle trial competitions known as scrambles in 1912. As the popularity grew, the competitions became known as motocross racing. Because the competitions were held on rugged terrain, suspension frames were developed by the early 1930s. By the late 1960s, Japanese motorcycle companies like Suzuki began challenging the European manufacturers. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the typical two-stroke air-cooled, twin-shock rear suspension machines were replaced with water-cooled machines. By 2004, the two stroke engines were replaced with four-stroke engines. As the sport continued to evolve, sub-disciplines were created: Supercross, which was founded in America and sanctioned as a World Championship event by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in 1974, Motocross Freestyle or FMX, and Supermoto.
